Rabies: How It Spreads, Symptoms, Dog Signs, First Aid & Precautions
Rabies is a serious and life-threatening viral disease that spreads mainly through the bite, scratch, or saliva of an infected animal, most commonly a dog. The virus attacks the brain and nervous system and has no cure once symptoms appear. Early signs in humans include fever, headache, pain at the bite site, anxiety, and weakness, followed by severe symptoms such as fear of water, confusion, paralysis, and seizures. Dogs with rabies may show aggression, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, unusual behaviour, or paralysis. Immediate first aid after a dog bite, thoroughly washing the wound with soap and water and seeking medical care for anti-rabies vaccination is critical. Rabies is 100% preventable with timely treatment, proper vaccination of pets, and public awareness.
